Change! We all know some form of the axiom, "The only constant is change." Experience has proven this to be true for me.
George Harrison (my favorite Beatle) wrote "All Things Must Pass," in which he talks about how "sunrise doesn't last all morning, a cloudburst doesn't last all day."
I love the metaphor about how our lives are like a river. Always changing while staying the same. If I visit a spot by a river, the water flowing past is never the same as a moment before. At the same time, it's also the same.
Sometimes change come to us unbidden and sometimes we deliberately seek change. When we seek change, those around us may have a tough time. Most of us don't like change. That's okay. If I purposefully change my habits, maybe claiming my creative time as important, those around me may be uncomfortable. Maybe I radically change my style or medium of art making. I will likely get questions about why I'm doing things differently.
John Paul Jones, the bassist for Led Zeppelin was asked what it was like the first time they played the iconic "Stairway to Heaven" in concert.
He said the audience didn't know what to do with the song. They just stood there. "Hey oh, where's Whole Lotta Love, part 2?"
"Stairway to Heaven" went on to become the most requested song in radio history, but it was very different from what they were doing before.
I challenge you to change it up a bit. If we change our creative habits, just a tiny little bit, we never know what might happen. Try something new. You might end up with something iconic!
